Postage due is the term used for mail sent with insufficient postage. A postage due stamp is a stamp added to an underpaid piece of mail to indicate the extra postage due.

Background

While the problem of what to do about letters not paying the full correct fee had existed since the creation of regular postal systems, it was greatly heightened by the advent of postage stamps, since customers were now making their own decisions about the right amount to pay, without the assistance of a presumably-knowledgeable postal clerk.

While at various times some countries have simply adopted the expedient of returning the letter to the sender, many others have taken the approach of delivering the letter and collecting the fee from the recipient. Initially the process was handled by a clerk writing something like "Due 3 cents" on the cover, but this was subject to abuse by mail carriers, who might write it on themselves and pocket the difference.

First stamps

The problem was solved by France in 1859, with the issuance of official postage due stamps, affixed at the delivery office before being taken out to the recipients. Many other countries followed suit. (Occasionally, regular postage stamps have been used to fulfill a postage due function.

Postage due stamps (or "labels", to clarify that they have no value of their own) are not always affixed to individual letters; in the case of business mail, the total due might be summed, and the appropriate stamps added to the top letter in a bundle, or to a bundle's wrapper. The labels have also been used to collect money for other purposes, such as magazine subscriptions.

Since postage due stamps are almost always used only within a single country, they are usually quite simple in design, mostly consisting of a large numeral, and an inscription saying "postage due", "porto", etc; often there is no country name. As with definitive stamps, a variety of values are needed to make up specific amounts.

parcel post returned with "postage due"?
Q. I figure it would be easier to get an answer from Yahoo than trying to ask the Post Office about this; I sent a package via parcel post to a Post Office Box. Apparently the recipient closed the Box so the package was returned - postage due! I have never heard of such a thing; I had to pay $6 to send it, $6 to receive it back and another $6 to send it to the new address! Is this outrageous? Better yet, is it a new policy inflicted on us by the USPS?

A. No; that's standard with parcels and closed boxes.

What happens to a parcel with too low postage stamp?
Q. Hi, I've sent several small packets from Uk abroad. 5 of them never arrived. When I was posting them, I was surprised to learn that the postage I paid for some of the parcels was lower than I thought, but didn't question it, after all the man working there is the expert, not me. When 5 of them didnt arrive, I discovered that the postage was too low due to the man working at my local post office sending my parcels as letters instead of small packets. Does anyone know where I can retrieve my parcels? Is there anything I can do? I learnt that stuff send using Airmail is covered up to 34, but I believe it will take forever to get anything back as their investigation takes about 15 weeks and I worry about the proof of postage he gave me as it… [cont.]

A. It depends. If they send it postage due, where the reciepiant needs to pay the difference, it could be siting on a shelf waiting for the payment. If that is the case, it will be there for 10-14 day and then retuned. If they decide to just return it, then it could take 4-7 days depending where you sent it. good luck
